Gavels Club Program

Program

The educational program is the heart of Toastmasters. It is the means through which you develop your communication and leadership skills and achieve your goal of becoming a better communicator.
The core of the program is the Communication and Leadership Program manual(also called the "basic manual"),which contains 10 speech projects. The basic manual helps develop your speaking skills one step at a time. Every project builds upon what you have learned in the preceding project. As you complete the projects you'll learn the importance of sincerity in speaking, how to effectively organize a presentation, how to use body language and voice to convey your message, word choice and props, persuasive speaking, and how to inspire others.
Your first goal as a member is to complete this manual. When you do,you are eligible for Competent Gavelier recognition. You can then enter the Advanced Communication and Leadership Program, where you can refine and enhance your basic skills. This program consists of 15 manuals, each containing five speech projects. Many of the manuals are career-oriented;several are not. You choose the manuals you want to complete and the skills you want to learn.
The manuals are:
•The Entertaining Speaker  •The Professional Salesperson  •Public Relations
  •The Discussion Leader  •Specialty Speeches  •Storytelling
•The Professional Speaker  •Communicating on Television  •Technical Presentations
•Speaking to Inform  •Speeches by Management  •Interpretive Reading
  •Personal Communication  •Special Occasion Speeches  •Humorously Speaking

Every prepared speaker is assigned an evaluator who points out speech strengths and offers suggestions for improvement. This is the heart of the Toastmasters program. Whenever you give a prepared speech, your evaluator will point out the presentation's strengths and offer suggestions for improving your next speech. In the beginning, your Club members will applaud your effort, but later they'll applaud your skill.

The Club Meeting

A Gavel Club meets once a week or every other week for about an hour or two. Each meeting gives everyone an opportunity to practice. Everyone talks-that's why you're there! You'll build "quick-thinking" skills as you're asked to give a one-to two-minute impromptu speech during Table Topics. Later, you may be the person asking the Table Topics questions. Eventually you'll introduce speakers, give prepared speeches, conduct meetings, and perform many other roles.
Members of Gavel Clubs can also purchase items from the vast store of educational materials that are available to regular Toastmasters members. Such items as our "Debate Handbook",which contains basic principles of formal debate, with sample debate formats and judging tips,Video Cassette programs that build special qualities of leadership, examine leadership styles, teach how to keep meetings on track and end them on a positive note, and even how to sell products, proposals and ideas to groups, are available to members of Gavel Clubs.
If the Gavel Club sounds like the answer to your prayers, then e-mail  newclubs@toastmasters.org. Some of your questions may already have been answered in our F.A.Q..

Gavels Club

“Ours is the only organization I know that is dedicated to the individual. We work together to bring out the best in each of us and then we apply our skills to help others.”
-Ralph Smedley
Founder Toastmasters International

Gavel Clubs are affiliates of Toastmasters International, the leading movement devoted to making effective oral communication a world-wide reality.
Through its member clubs, Toastmasters International helps men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening, and thinking-vital skills that promote self-actualization, enhance leadership potential, foster human understanding, and contribute to the betterment of mankind.
It is basic to this mission that Toastmasters International continually expand its worldwide network of clubs, thereby offering ever-greater numbers of people the opportunity to benefit from its programs. However, minors and those who cannot afford to pay Toastmasters dues, cannot normally avail of the benefit of Toastmasters training. For those individuals, Toastmasters International has an answer in the Gavel Clubs.
The Gavel Club program is open to any group of individuals who cannot otherwise qualify to become a Toastmasters Club due to age, inability to pay full Toastmasters dues, or other circumstances which would prohibit full participation in Toastmasters activities, except that such individuals cannot be employed adults. This makes it ideal for high schools and colleges where potential members are either below 18 years of age or have yet to embark on their chosen careers. Gavel Clubs may also be formed in rehabilitational Institutions, hospitals and elsewhere. Thus,Gavel Clubs also provide an opportunity for community service by Toastmasters members or clubs.
Members of Gavel Clubs use the very same manuals and training that Toastmasters members use. Gavel clubs differ in that they have limited access to the leadership track awards and materials, cannot participate in Toastmasters area and district speech contests and do not enjoy many of the privileges and benefits that come with full membership in Toastmasters.

English Camp 2011

The Third English Camp was successfully held on 2nd. July 2011 from 9.00 am till 4.30 pm. The objective of the camp was to provide an environment where the students could learn and use ENGLISH IN A FUN-FILLED  WAY.

A total of 75 students from Form 1 and 2 joined the camp. 55 student facilitators volunteered their services to help in the running of the camp. I was very touched by this spirit of volunteerism and their show of support for the camp. Who says students have to be forced to serve ?

The camp was launched by the Principal and the PTA committee members. This was followed by the ice breaking activities facilitated by the camp coordinator, Madam Chen. The  students were each given a piece of jigsaw puzzle and they had to look for their group members in order to complete the jigsaw puzzle. The completed jigsaw puzzle had to be pasted on to a piece of cardboard and they had to guess the proverb illustrated in the jigsaw puzzle. With much excitement and eagerness, the students located their group members and completed the task. This was followed by Kim's Game, a memory game where they had to write down the list of things shown to them from memory.

Next, the students participated in the station games. A total of 12 stations were set up with different English language activities such as wordsearch, scavenger hunt, poster making, completing the proverbs and other language games. Each group gathered at one station and they were given 10 minutes to complete the task. After 10 minutes the groups changed stations until they had completed all the activies at the various stations. There was much fun, excitement and laughter as the groups raced against time to complete the task. The winner was the group that had accumulated the highest points from all the stations. This activity was carried out well and the students were fully engrossed and engaged in all the activities. Many thanks to all the teachers who had prepared all the interesting activities. Miss Shahrini did a well planned and excellent poster activity. Well done for the good job done.

After the station games, the students were ravenously hungry and they truly deserved their lunch for doing such a good job so far. Although lunch was a simple meal, the students enjoyed themselves as they mingled and chatted happily with their friends.

Enjoying lunch... yummy food..

After lunch, it was time to test their creativity and presentation skills. They had to create a team logo and present it to everyone. After this, they were given some recyclable materials and they had to invent something useful with it. The students had very good ideas and were indeed very creative but their setback was their inability to present their finished product to the audience. Besides their lack of fluency, they were shy and lacked confidence while speaking in public. This issue needs to be addressed and the school has set up the Gavels Club, which is similar to the Toastmaster's Club to help students improve their public speaking skills.

The next activity was a Treasure Hunt planned and prepared by the Interactors. The students enjoyed themselves tremendously as they raced through the school grounds, leaving no stones unturned in search of clues.

The icing on the cake was the prize giving ceremony, as the students waited excitedly to receive their prizes, which was given out by the head of language department, Madam Lee Phek See. All good things must come to an end and it is with much reluctance we bid farewell to the third English Camp.

Let's divide our treasure...

Last but not least, I would like to thank everyone who has helped in one way or another in the planning and running of the camp. All the English Language teachers have worked their hearts out to make this camp a runaway success. Besides them, the student facilitators also helped tremendously in the smooth running of the camp. The Electronic Club, the ICT Club. the English Language Society and the  Interactors also worked very hard. I wish to thank everyone who has helped and supported us in this camp. Many thanks and appreciation also goes to the principal, Madam Siew, the senior assistants, Mr. Wong Kum Ming, Mr. Soo and Madam Ong, the afternoon supervisor, Madam Chan, the head of language department, Madam Lee  and the ICT teachers Madam Ooi and Mr. Thoo.

We look forward to next year's camp which is hoped to be held in a more relaxed and wonderful resort. However. we need sponsors in order to make this dream a reality. Anyone out there interested in sponsoring, please feel free to contact us. Any contribution is much appreciated.
